Squad. How are we today? I know I’m normally pretty obnoxious during the openers here, but finally, what we have all been waiting for, is here. Fluffy white flakes have been gracing our presence pretty much on the daily now and we’ve even seen some snow plows on the road already, things are getting wild and it’s time again to spend every day possible on hill for the next five and a half (ish) months. With that said, we’re going to look into something that will keep you on your snowboard for the next 5 and a half (ish) months; hemp.

Now, I know what you’re gonna say about why we use hemp in our top sheets, “a-herdy-hurr oh so you can smoke your board too a-hurddy-hurr-hurr.” No… Hemp is actually a really amazing natural material that time and time again shows to be superior to many other non-natural materials that can compose top sheets. Among the many unique properties of this natural fiber, some that we benefit from are its durability, strength, absorbency, weight (or lack of) and the list goes on.

Before you write us off on it still, just know that car companies like Mercedes and BMW are using hemp in the their technologies over materials like steel, fibreglass, and carbon fiber. Hemp is less likely to dent, lighter, and less brittle than almost any other material to be in similar stress conditions, which makes it a no brainer to why we use it in our top sheets. Being on the mountain in cold conditions we need a material that is going to be flexible in cold climate while retaining its pop and form, which is where the hemp stringers come into play.

To top it off, hemp is an extremely sustainable material to use and produce. It can grow straight as an arrow up to 12 ft without branching occurring, meaning it produces much more usable material than not. A whopping 300 hemp plants can be planted within one square yard, which not only helps the plant grow straight, it also helps save space. Oh yeah, it’s biodegradable too! Doesn’t get much better than that!

Come test hemp in its most prime form December 16-17th @smugglersnotchvt.

Thanks for readin’ in this week folks and I hope you can all get out on your local hill, get some turns in, and turn winter mode to 100%!
