Personal (and Environmental) Hygiene
Hello Green Tip Tuesdayer’s and happy Tuesday to all! Before we get into this week’s topic keep, I just wanted to mention to keep an eye for upcoming Powe. Mountain Projects at Bolton Valley and Sugarbush- dates will be dropping soon and we’re gonna need everyone’s help in enjoying all the fun that will be had! End Plug.
Ok, here we go! This week we’re getting personal with some hygiene and taking a close look at an environmental catastrophe we use multiple times on the daily; our toothbrush. Big (quick) shout out to Nate Combs for showing me his super cool new, environmentally conscious toothbrush. Seeing his weird looking new toothbrush got me thinking about the conventional toothbrush used worldwide (this may not apply to all you fancy toothbrush aficionados that have battery-powered instruments). Upon further exploration, I realized “WHOA, THAT’S KINDA WILD.” Let me share…
In America alone it’s estimated that over 850 million to 1 billion toothbrushes are tossed away every year, EVERY YEAR. That’s a lot of plastic. In just ONE year, that equates to roughly 50 million pounds of trash that are composed entirely of the little plastic things we use to clean our teeth. Being made entirely out of plastic, rubber, and nylon, not a single part of these are biodegradable, which I guess is understandable considering the job it is assigned to. That’s all the convincing I need to already start thinking about how I can change that minor detail of my life to a more eco-friendly alternative, so let’s take a look at our options.
One idea that is becoming more popular is using bamboo for handles. While these would still require nylon for bristles, it does provide a major reduction in the amount of petroleum and plastics used in creating the overall product. One company, in particular, is taking an entirely different approach to their design by going the fully recyclable rubber route.
Boie USA is a company that specializes in oral care, and care for the environment, two of the most important things ever (don’t worry mom, I haven’t forgotten my dentist appointment in June). Boie’s recyclable rubber approach has many interesting advantages compared to a conventional toothbrush. For starters, a Boie brush has embedded silver into its rubber bristles since silver is known to have antimicrobial properties (science!). These rubber bristles sound weird, but they’re actually softer than nylon bristles and are more gentle on your enamel and gums. Oh yeah, they also last twice as long as your average toothbrush. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better(it does), the heads of the Boie toothbrush are interchangeable!!! That means when one brush is done you don’t have to throw out the whole thing, and you can mix and match colors if that’s that you’re into.
That’s about it for this week folks! Thanks for dropping in and don’t forget to stop by the site to stock up on gear and take advantage of the 30% board deal while it’s still going on! Uh-reeba-dare-chee!
