Let Science Stir Your Coffee

Earthlings how are we this week!? Definitely looking forward to some warmer temps the next few days over in our parts, seems like it’s been nothing but clouds lately. Before we get started, just want to extend a YUUUUGGGE thank you to @Sugarbush_VT and everyone else who came out to volunteer some time, clean up the mountain, and enjoy some great food. Stats from the clean up are getting cooked up as we speak so keep an eye out for how much greener the mountain is now! Also shoutout to the sun gods for giving us a beautiful day, couldn’t plan around this weather if I tried too.

Alrighty, onto this week’s Green Tip. Keeping the coffee theme alive I have seemed to create for myself throughout several Green Tip’s, this week we’re talkin’ coffee stirrers(stirrerrers). And not just any coffee stirrer, PLASTIC stirrers, the worst of them all. You know, the miniature plastic straws, sometimes just one straw, sometimes double barrelled, sometimes just a really long X shaped stick you can’t even drink out of that you only use once? Ya, those ones. DON’T USE THEM. So. Much. Waste. There is a better solution.

In America alone over 400 million cups of coffee are chugged per day and if you’re anything like the consumer I am, you’re generally on the run with your awesome, reusable, to-go coffee mug, and refilling at random places throughout the day. This means you probably don’t have the option of using the spoon in your utensil drawer and are stuck with the dreaded plastic stir stick. The one time use, doesn’t really work that well to drink out of, why is this shaped like a long X, stir stick. You can almost feel the shame resting on your shoulders as you pick it up, stir your coffee, and immediately through it in the little trash hole thing in the counter 2.64 seconds later. BUT WAIT! There is another way to stir the contents of your mug; SCIENCE!

Yup, that’s right let science stir for you! By the properties of diffusion, the cream, sugar, and/or whatever it is you fancy in your coffee, will naturally (on a molecular level) want mix together to create an even consistency throughout. Yup, that simple. Sometimes you need to aid this even consistency by raising the temperature of your beverage and swingin’ that bad boy around with a couple flicks of the wrist. SO, don’t even think about using that stupid stir stick anymore, even if it’s wood, don’t be wasteful. It’s little actions like covering the top of your coffee nice and tight, and shaking it like a maniac over using dumb plastic that make a yuge difference.

That’s it for this week gang, have a most excellent week and get out and enjoy the nice weather that’s coming in! Well, if you live in a geographically close area to me that is! Goodye.
